Q.

An article "Ashok Chakra is for bravery and not for getting killed" Army Chief General (Retd) V P Malik is right in saying dat we got too emotional in giving away d Ashok Chakra this year. V need to be more reasonable in such matters. It was unfortunate dat some of of our cops were killed by terrorists wen dey least expected it. Der contribution and sacrifice cannot be negated or lessened, but we ought to practically weigh if d ppl being conferred d honour fit d description of d award. Your views pl??

Because the Army Chief General (Retd) V P Malik said it, everybody gives it a thought. When I said it i was ridiculed. The same should be true with the compensation. On the one hand those killed in the Taj and Trident hotels were richy rich and giving Rs 5 lakhs to their kin is just like making fun of the situation. Also those killed at CST and Cama hospital were very poor and giving their kin Rs 5 lakhs is just like a bumper lottery. The compensation should have some rational behind it. Compensation equal to five or ten years of income (average of last three years income filed) should be the criteria.

Govt. wanted to assuage the feelings of angry Indians who openly criticised the Govt. for their lapses in not tackling the terrorists despite prior intimation about their activity. So Awards were given to martyrs. I agree with Malikji.

In my opinion a person in uniform should not be awarded medals for dying. Getting killed while on duty is a known risk associated with his job. It is only those who have survived the encounter and got the better of the enemy should be considered for gallantry awards.

That is sort of true.

My DEEP respects FOR LIFE to police who gave up their lives fighting off terrorists....but in the end of the day....is not giving up one's life for the betterment of the country, a central duty of the uniformed forces?

I agree w/ VP Malik because what we are encouraging is a culture where medals are awarded for doing one's duty- rather than excelling in it. That alone would dilute the value of the gallantry award greatly.
