N.S. Bendre (1910 - 1992) is considered to be the first Indian cubist artist .
Bendre being a enthusiastic traveller, visited many places and translated the life of common folk and landscapes onto his canvas.. He painted his favorite subjects landscapes and portraits in oils and gouache.
He cultivated a technique to present them in his work as a total perception in which his mind or emotion played a significant part. His art was influenced contemporary world trends and the tenets of Cubism , expressionism and abstract styles.
His work potrayed a combination of European modernism with Indian theme with a touch of elegance.
Lotus sellers and the comrades are classic example of Bendres technique. The women selling fresh flowers in the above and women enjoying a afternoon chit-chat in the painting below decipt the daily life in india. He has beautifully captured the essence of the life of the common Indian folks. The colour scheme represents the mood and the emotion of the theme.
