Yes we have already seen that the seniors cannot take their place in the team for granted and survival in the team would be purely based on performance. Seniors like Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and till some time ago even Yuvraj Singh, are no longer a part of the team. Dravid, Laxman and now even Sachin realised that their hey days were over and decided to retire.
As far as batting is concerned, the Indian team has many good and talented young batsmen who can fill in the shoes of the seniors. However, it is the bowling which is a reason for worry as we lack a genuine wicket taking bowler in all conditions. Ashwin may have had a good start to his international career, but I think his performances are over rated. If you look at his stats, you will find that the most number of his wickets have come under friendly home conditions and he was a huge failure in the eight tests we played and lost in England and Australia. Yes the youngsters are performing very well and the seniors can no longer take their placers in the team for granted.
