Charity should not be a secret but what a person donates should. The essence of charity is to give help to others without seeking any glory for it yourself. I find it rather obscene when people who donate large sums to charity then publicise it so that people will give them a slap on the back and say what a good fellow he is. I would then question his motives for giving to charity in the first instance.

Charity is a synonym of worship. Do we need to advertise our worship and prayers? No,
We need not keep accounts for prayers. Similarly, it should not only be a secret it should be forgotten .It is the most humble work done for the Gods children. Who we are to perform such action unless almighty entrust us responsibilities and empowers with capabilities. According to our mythology, one need not keep track of his/her good Deeds. It may make us proud and arrogant.

Yes keep it q complete secret. If you let your name be known then it looks as if your gesture was for earning a good name in society and that spoils your philanthropic action.

Who said? Charity need not be a secret. We only have to make sure that our charity does not get into our head.
In other words we need to hide it from ourselves; not necessarily from others
There is a saying 'what the left hand gives, the right hand does not know'.
Giving for the sake of giving without expecting anything in return

The voice of your question clearly suggests that you are positively thinking that Charity should be kept a secret. Main purpose of the charity is for good cause and it is not based on the discrimination like country, religion, caste, creed or community. There are huge organizations all over the world whose foundation is based on Charities only, and the board of directors keeps screening the events time to time and sees the need and eligibility of application for granting donations from Charitable Institutions. So, in this case one cannot make it a secret since these organizations have to make the donations as public notices. There is another angle too. Such declaration attracts many other who think there should be their contribution in the cause for humanity. The most illustrative examples are Mr. Bill Gates and Mr. Warren Buffet. Both are among on the top lists who keep donating on the name of charity, all over the world, and for humanity causes. No wonder they are being known for the ...more

Charity is, in a way, like art......Art for art's sake is purer that art for ANY other sake....so too with charity.....charity is to be treated as an end in itself and not as a means to any other end like fame, good name or ANYTHING else

The whole idea of charity is altruistic benevolence.....when we are conspicuously charitable....altruism is defeated..... because what we really end up showing people is that we re not actually altruistic but selfish in seeking praise for our benevolence. Another reason albeit cynical is that philanthrophy tends to attract lot of cons.... ppl tend to pester them for more money/charity......so better to underplay any charity that we do....

Yes, secrecy in charity is the best ,because the Donner becomes noble and humane ,when he reserves his satisfaction for the charity, without outward expressions makes the donee feels not humbled ,and bless him for the good thing being done whole heartedly.
