Kali or, properly, Kali Ma (Sanskrit: Kālī, Devanāgari: काली ; pronounced /kɑːliː; known by such titles as The Black One , Parvati Kali in the Vamana-purana, and Shyama or The Dark One) is a dark mother goddess in Hindu lore. Despite her chaotic, often destructive nature, she is actually considered a benevolent mother by many of her devotees.


Contemporary representation of Kali maKali Ma's appearance is described as awful: she wears a necklace of skulls, earrings made from corpses, and a girdle of human hands; she has fangs, is gaunt, laughs loudly, dances wildly, drinks the blood of her enemies until she becomes drunk, and is said to dwell in the cremation grounds.
