A high-pass filter is a filter that passes high frequencies well, but attenuates (reduces the amplitude of) frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency. The actual amount of attenuation for each frequency varies from filter to filter. It is sometimes called a low-cut filter; the terms bass-cut filter or rumble filter are also used in audio applications. A high-pass filter is the opposite of a low-pass filter, and a band-pass filter is a combination of a high-pass and a low-pass. It is useful as a filter to block any unwanted low frequency components of a complex signal while passing the higher frequencies.

A high pass filter is a technology used by car audio manufacturers. A high pass filter filters the sound of a low frequency the limit to which is set by the consumer.
The high pass filter attenuates or cancels the sound and diverts it to the rear speakers. The low frequency sound is usually routed to the woofer and in its absence the rear speakers. Low frequency sounds on a low grade sound system cannot be heard properly; increasing the volume makes the sound worse and causes the speakers to buzz. Installing a high pass filter remedies this problem.

a basic high pass filter circuit
contains capacitor in series
and resistor across the input voltage
when the frequency is low, the capacitive reactance is high
hence minimum output is available
when frequency is high the capacitive reactance is small
the output equals input and gain is unity
this circuit passes high frequencies rejecting low frequencies
hence it is called high pass filter
