The male dominated Indian society categories women into 2 categories.......... Goddess & unchaste....Sitas & shoorpanakas. It makes it easier for them to dominate women because very few qualify as Goddess and the rest of the women can be ill-treated and trampled under men's foot. Otherwise why cant we see women just as women with normal virtues and vices as men?

It is matter of faith and belief. Women are compared to all Goddess like Saraswati, Lakshmi ... and so on not only Durga. Here is one possible and non-religious aspect of why women is compared with Goddess Durga ....As Durga is considered to have eight hands, women are also multi dimensional - they need to perform many tasks simultaneously and who can do it better than a woman :))
