When Constantine accepted Christianity as the State religion of the Roman empire in the early 4th centruy, he declared that Sunday would be the weekly holiday. There is a reason for this. As per the old testament and the practice upto that time, Saturday was the last day of the week, the day God decided He would rest after He had finished the creation of the earth with all its manifestations including the human species. But in Rome of that time, Sunday was the special day of worship of its now termed Pagan Gods. In order to get the Roman subject's accpetance of his conversion to the Christian faith, he declared that Sunday would hence forth be the holiday for Christianity too. Many old traditionalist and puritan christians don't accept this and still treat Saturday as the special day when they go for worship.Answered by Omega, 20 Mar '08 01:27 pm
