Why no other country has the kind of craze for gold or gold ornaments like that in India?

Unlike the west in Asia gold is seen as wealth and savings and hence such craze. India consumes 933 tonnes of gold mainly as ornaments and China 811 tonnes in 2011.

Older the civilization greater the craze for precious metals like gold, silver, platinum etc. Most of the oriental nations have a very distant past. For them civilization and progress began much before the onset of industrial revolution. For those countries that grew after the middle ages they took to mechanized way of life. Whereas the older civilization like Roman, Greek, Chinese, Indian etc got used to non mechanized way of life. For their clothing they either used loose cloth or covered their body with colorful metals and/or stones made into ornaments. Whereas the countries that progressed because of industrial revolution adapted to a life style of wearing stitched cloths. For their clothing they did not use ornament to decorate their body.. In those country or races that have progressed because of Industrial revolution the ornament that they preferred to use was a ring or watch where the usage of gold or stones are not much.
