Beside he never hankered for any award.

Abul Kalam Azad refused the Bharat Ratn Award because he beleived that people who select awardees should not be the recepients of the award.However he was conferred Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1992

Maulana Azad had felt that the people who were responsible for giving the awards could not pin the medals on themsselves

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad refused it in 1960s because he felt that those in the committee that chose the recipients of the Bharat Ratna should not receive it
