TIRUNELVELI: Health Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam has said that over 27.43 lakh persons across the State had been affected by mysterious fever during this monsoon. However, he asserted that there was no severe outbreak of dengue, leptospirosis or chikungunya in the State.

The fever is caused by a hitherto unknown mutated virus. A team of experts from ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), Madurai, will examine the patients shortly and based on their report appropriate measures will be taken, Mr. Panneerselvam told reporters here on Thursday.

After the fever spread rapidly at Melapalayam and Kadayanallur, Mr. Panneerselvam, along with Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj and other top officials, inspected some of the affected areas in the district and had detailed discussions with Collector M. Jayaraman and others on controlling the spread of the disease.
