It (photosynthesis) is used by plants to convert light energy, normally from the sun, into chemical energy that can be used to fuel the organisms' activities. Carbohydrates, such as sugars, are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water

This is how plants produce energy. They are autotrophs, meaning they make their own food. They take in sunlight and convert it to energy in the form of ATP. WIthout it, plants would die.
