Q.

Why is ORIGINALITY so rare in society?
People adopt, imitate, follow, steal and borrow ideas from others,
and yet wont try to sort out life their own way. Why are we afraid to be different?

Read BF SKINNERS view's on originality.
well nothing is original in this world.Human's only rediscover, find, invent, what is already there in the universe but hidden.

only handful people do that since it needs time and effort and most of human's want easy way out doing copying other's.

It was not rare earlier. Its when one section of people started finding ideas of others better than theirs, they started emulating and this was the ground work done which continued in loss of identity of own, dwelling upon others for their creativity, and once gone far with this, its scary to attempt to be original for the fear of failure . And when once on top for any reason, trying something different which might raise a fall is always avoided.
