You are correctIn ramayana, Ramji has done few errors like this.Other error is , Killing Vali unhidden for satisfying Sukriva.
All the writers have clearly pointed out this.
You shd read Vali's dialogues reg this".If anything happened to me by anybody, I will pray "Oh Rama, what is this"But When Rama himself is doing wrong, Whom shd I complain and seek justice..."

I strongly feel that it was a wrong decision.He should have had all the respect and love for Sitaji.He also seta wrong precedent in the society.
