India last won the world Cup in Hockey in the year 1975. At that time it was played on turf. The stick work of Indian players mesmerized the Europeans. So to bring end to the hegemony of the sub-continent, Astro - turf was introduced. It helped the power play of the Europeans and the Australians. Since then, India got some sporadic victories against Pakistan only. Even it is quite difficult to beat the Koreans who are now a major force. The hype over victory against Pakistan was misplaced as Pakistan and India play the same brand of Hockey. Sometimes Pakistan will win and sometimes India. But show me where Pakistan are also winning against Europeans and Australians. Unlike Football, Hockey is no more a popular game in India. Hockey is not well packaged and marketed. Moderate success in Hockey does not ensure you a great life. Look at the difference in lives of Dhanraj Pillai and Sachin Tendulkar, Baichung Bhutia and even a Sania Mirza. Lack of facility given to them ,self confidence , or less name in it as compare to other games or u can say cricket
