Well I can tell you one thing from reading your question, your comments, the answers and the comments given to the answers - that a Lady would not want to know any one of you. That's the difference!

This is basically a difference in attitude. If you use both words in the same breath, it would possibly mean that the woman you are referring to in a rather derrogatory sense and the lady is distinguished. Literally, lady is a feminine version of lord, so she must be more educated, more beautiful, more modest etc. But, when D. H. Lawrence writes "woman is the place of our going in and coming out" he probably wants to glorify woman but doesn't use the word lady. In this way, lady is more close to the feudal culture, while woman is a democratic being.

Woman is the common term used for unknown and unadressed famales. Lady is for the known femal with esteem and respect.
