(1) Religious lectures teach people to give up their inflated ego and submit to God. Most people do not like this
(2) People see that many evil people are having lot of money and power. So they think that all this religious lectures are just theory but not practical. So they do not like to listen
(3) Different religions teach different things. People believe that only their own religious beliefs are true. So they do not like to listen to religious lectures, explanations of religious books belonging to other religions

All these are ok as long as they are with good intention, sensible and non-provocative. Added to that, we have gr8 many HM here.
As I hv understood, by nature ppl. here have high threshold limits, but when emotions get bottled-up for long time it has very high tendency to give it back and thatz what itz happening over here.
