When boys themselves are looking to take in educated girls who can contribute income these days as spouses, I don't find it surprising if girls do the same. Face it, this is not a Communist country, nobody is giving u a free home, free health, free education and free meals. Everything has a price tag attached.
And India is a Victorian society, at least the modern parts of INdia. And a girl has a lot less social security than do boys. So it is only natural for girls to think in terms of financial security in consumerist societies.
This is not common to India alone. Even in the US and in "free" societies, u see that most supermodels and glamour queens who walk the ramp always have a 60+ millionare as a "boyfriend." Cindy Crawford herself married a very old business tycoon in California. Ralph Lauren- that 90 yr old dude who makes branded shirts- has a girlfriend who is younger than his grand daughter's age.
