Lot's of people enjoy reading magazines like Stardust and love following every move made by movie stars.. so there is obviously a fan club out there and thus all these publicity stunts,

There will be supply only if there is demand. Quite a large number of people enjoy knowing personal and private things about their favourite heroes and develop a sort of blind hero worship. These stunts entertain them and their number is increasing. They are interested, it's suffering for others.
