Why do grown ups call other people as aunt uncle in India

We learnt it from britishers otherwise every regional language had their own specific words to address elders.

In india, most of us call grown ups as chacha, mama, bhaiya......chachai, mami, maushi, etc....

Not just in india. this is western culture that came here, while westerners moved to other terms , indians stick to uncle / aunt as a mark of respect to the elders
