Probably your interaction had been mostly with Bengali from Calcutta. I have come across Bengalis not only claiming to be from places like Kalyani, Burdawan, Durgapur, Asansol, Midnapore Cooch Bihar, Malda or some of the other places in West Bengal but some even say they are from places which are not in Bengal like Hazaribagh, Dhanbad etc. In fact a Bengali who had lived in East Bengal will invariably say he is from Dacca, Kulna, etc.

Yes sir, but the same is from other states also, if you obsevere deeply, they say iam from Keral, hum to MP ke hai, hum Madrasi, (formerlly Chhenai people use to say so in Bombay (mumbai)) because these people know that you wont be able to know or mentaly locate if they give you their proper city/village name.

Kolkatta represents everything that is the culture of Bengal as well as what every Bengali strives for. So no other city can match it.
Say something that seems to be even remotely unflattering about Kolkatta to a Bengali and you will never hear the end of it.
Having said this,I would like to add that in private conversation some Benaglis have (grudgingly) admitted to me that they find Mumbai life having an edge over their beloved city
