IT IS A LEGACY OF WESTERN CULTURE
It is that time of year again when the alcohol ads are all colored with red and green, we dutifully stock up on alcohol beverages to be good hosts for our friends and ready ourselves for the biggest drinking night of the year, New Years Eve.

How did this happen? When did New Years Eve become a frat party? Other cultures celebrate the New Year with a communal feast with minimal drinking.

Can we celebrate the holidays without alcohol? The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration thinks we can and has offered guidelines on why and how to host safe holiday celebrations.

First and foremost, we are reminded that keeping our guests safe is the primary goal. The issue of drunk driving is addressed. We are reminded that every half hour, someone dies in a drunk-driving-related crash in this country. The safest way to insure that none of your guests drive drunk is to serve beverages other than alcohol.
