Hockey in which India has an impressive record with eight Olympic gold medals was popular during 1960s and was declared a national game. Popularity of cricket increased later due to commercialization of the game. Even winning of 1983 world cup was not popular in many parts of India. In the process the quality of our hockey players was diminished due to various reasons. Today if administrators of the game work whole heatedly to promote good players in the international levels and can wins medals one after another it will again become popular. Let us hope for the best and restore hockey as the national sport. If we change our national sport at this time we will be a laughingstock internationally.
