The only reason I could think of was that it was a defensive strategy - looking at the condition of the pitch. They perhaps thought that India could stage a recovery and take the test to a draw { ? ? ? ? ] and also wanted to give their bowlers some rest, so that they can come back with renewed vigour to destroy the batting line up.
Extend the lead, go for some quick wickets and Indians will bring in their own down fall as anyway they have lost everything in the mental department.
These could be the reasons.
