Sorrows and joys are two faces of a coin. You need sorrows and pains to strengthen your belief in enjoying joys. As sung by JS,

They are important so as to strengthen a person in life and to make on realize that life cannot be filled with only joy and happiness...there must always be ups and downs in life so that it will not be a bore and it makes one to value the happiness gained even in the smallest thing
