Yes it is old fashioned and immaterial - people never make the same enquiries about men.

It is indeed old fashioned but many women themselves write mrs and want to show their marital status.

It is important to know the maqrital status of a female just to see there is any chance left for him or his relatives or friends. When someone is already married, there is not much use of getting interested in her.

This is not true in most of the cases. Whether it is applying for opening a bank account, ration card, pass port, pan card, investment of any kind, jobs etc declaration of marital status is applicable to both male and female. In most of the case like pan card or passport women have to stick to her maiden name and not use her name as changed due to change in her marital status. More over women have the option to choose for themselves whether they want to disclose their martial status or not by prefixing Ms (if they want to keep it ambiguous) Mrs or Miss (if they want to declare). But men do not have this privilege of exercising a choice even if they want to disclose their marital status in the title to their name. Whether married or single ready to mingle, men have to declare himself in the old fashioned way of Mr. In social interaction if the purpose is to have a fling or flirt it is better to know a women's marital status. Our criminal laws are still old fashioned. It gives more priv ...more

I felt women are inquisitive to know marital status of a seemingly eligible man and vice versa. Do not wish to see it as old fashioned, as will be felt terrible if people don't care or mind about marital status of others.
