Jesse Wilford Reno was born in 1861 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He invented the escalator in 1891 when he was 30.
The first escalator was installed on Coney Island, NY in 1896 as an amusement ride even though it was only six feet tall. Seventy-five thousand people rode that inclined elevator for the two-week time period that the inclined escalator exhibited at Coney Island. The Coney Island success made Reno and his invention more popular.
Reno wasnt the only inventor with an escalator design; Charles Seeberger and George Wheeler made the escalator with steps. Renos design was just an inclined ramp. Elishia Otis, who invented the elevator, bought both of their patents in 1903 and combined them to make the modern escalator used today.
