Vasco de Gama was Portuguese explorer who was the first to sail from Europe to India. Being an explorer, he wanted to find the spice route to India and landed in Calicut (now Kozhikode) in Kerala.
Later, the Portuguese settled in India with Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli as their colonies.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli were liberated earlier and Goa, Daman & Diu were liberated on 19 December, 1961.
The Portuguese remained in India for about 458 years.
