The first human in space was Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, on April 12, 1961, aboard the Vostok 1 (one orbit around the Earth.
The first woman was cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963.
Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk when he left the Voskhod 2 on March 8, 1965.
Cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space on July 25, 1984.

The first American in space was Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7 on May 5, 1961.
The first American in orbit was John Glenn on Friendship 7, which launched February 20, 1962.
Sally Ride was the first American woman in space in 1983.
Eileen Collins was the first female space shuttle pilot, and with mission STS-93 in July 1999 she became the first woman to command a U.S. spacecraft.
