A man with a herd of cattles is telling many things in many occasions these days. He is now a Railway Icon certified by himself. The investment on railways was considerable since independence. The credit goes to the congress govt. at the centre. It has gone upto 10,800 crores of rupees in 1997 from 830 crores before independence. The income from railways has also increased considerably. In the year 1947-48, the gross income of railways was only Rs. 183.69 crores. In 1996-97, it has gone upto about Rs. 12,000 crores. Thus, within 49 years the income has gone upto about more than 65 times due to increase in travelling routes and increase in passengers. There is till a huge scope to increase the income of railways due to such demands in coming years despite the worst conditions of railway tracks and carriages. This is entirely a central govt.'s policy to upgrade national transport system and Lalu was only a caretaker of that policy.
The railway run and maintain more than 684 colleges and
