Naja ashei (Ashe's Spitting Cobra or Giant Spitting Cobra) is an African snake. With a length of about 2.6 m (8 ft), it is the world's largest species of spitting cobra and one of the most venomous snakes known. It was discovered in Kenya in 2004, but only classified as a distinct species in 2007 by Wolfgang Wster (Bangor University Wales) and Royjan Taylor (Director of the Bio-Ken Snake Farm in Watamu, Kenya). It was initially regarded as merely a brown-colored form of the Black-necked Spitting Cobra (Naja nigricollis). The specific epithet honors the late James Ashe[1], who founded the Bio-Ken Snake Farm and early on suspected that Naja ashei was a new species.
In addition to the dry lowlands of northern and eastern Kenya, it is found in similar habitats in northeastern Uganda, southern Ethiopia and southern Somalia.
Naja ashei is a very large cobra that averages 1.3 to 2m in length, and may reach a maximum of 2.8m, making them the largest spitting cobra species in the world. Ver ...more

Late James Ashe, founder of the Bio-Ken snake farmat watamu, Kenya.
Bio-Ken is a research centre, which deals with reptiles, especially snakes and snake-bite. Located less than 5 minutes drive from the hotels in Watamu, it houses the largest collection of Snakes in East Africa and is open to the public.
