Ganga Snaan does not simply mean bathing in the to clean the body. It means bathing with the purpose of purifying the mind and the soul. The body is easily purified by water. But it needs more than water to purify the soul. Ganga Snaan means bathing for the purification of the soul. This is done by prayers, by sacrifices, by giving charity and by having good and noble. thoughts for friends as well as for strangers...otherwise it is meaningless

People have made the water dirty n the dirty water of Ganga, even at Haridwar n Rishikesh does not encourage a religious person to take a holy dip.
