Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul born 15 October 1931) usually referred to as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, was the 11th President of India (2002 to 2007; popularly known as the People's President). He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 1997. He has also been a professor (of aerospace engineering) and is the first Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram (IIST).
Before his term as President, he worked as an aerospace engineer with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
