By Communism, most people refer to Marxism. The origins of this can be traced back to Karl Marx's large unfinished work 'Capital' (from the German title 'Das Kapital'), but the name actually refers back to a short pamphlet called 'The Communist Manifesto' written by Marx in collaboration with his friend Friedrich Engels (from which comes the famous quotation "Workers of the world, unite: you have nothing to lose but your chains!").
