Sir John Berry Hobbs (16 December 1882 - 21 December 1963), generally known as Jack Hobbs, played cricket for Surrey and England. Renowned as a very modest and self-effacing man, he was popularly referred to as "The Master". As a batsman, he scored more runs and more centuries in first-class cricket than any other player in the history of the game.

Jack Hobbs made 199 first-class centuries in his 834-match first-class career, including fifteen Test tons. Next is Patsy Hendren (170), followed by Wally Hammond (167), Phil Mead (153), Geoff Boycott (151) and Hobbs' partner in crime, Herb Sutcliffe (151). Of current players, Graeme Hick has 128, Mark Ramprakash 79 and Darren Lehmann 73 - all players who have played an extensive amount of domestic cricket while struggling to crack the international team.
