It must be based on the Principle of "Reward and Punishment". Punishment must not be Physical. The Child must know why he/she is being Punished and that must be such that it should make him/her realise his/her mistake. At the same time appropriate Rewarding mechanism must also be in place to encourage him/her on doing something Good.

School going children ( I think you may mean 6-7 Yr old) should NEVER be PUNISHED. Children should be only LOVED ,not punished. The whole life ahead is for all such things.Otherwise also, punishment is not a solution for any thing. It is the last thing ,when nothing is left out. They should be told very properly and careully on their mistake. The purpose is to improve and not repeat the same/similar mistake. This can be done by loving and teaching them proprly. It will be much more effective than punishining them on mistake.I will add--- On very Firstt day one small child was getting ready to go to school. Her mother started to educate and told "Never tell a lie". The innocent child asked "Mama, what is lie ?" Now you understand.

To hear about their problem and to be tried to solved by loving them. there is not necessary to make
any punishment to them which will be turned on reverse side.
