The Bharatiya Janata Party came into existence in the year 1980. BJP has its roots in The Bharatiya Jana Sang in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a nationalist leader from Bengal, former Union Minister and freedom-fighter. But at that time, it was not a competitor for the Congress. It was only in December 1980, due to the efforts of Vajpayee and Advani, that the party began to gain ground.

It formed from earlier Jansangh. Now a days it lacks principles and policies. It depends only on certain issues like Hindutwa to come to power. Such parties cannot stay for a long time. Some old people like Advani must be out in order to rebuilt the party with new blood. Previously no person use to come out of BJP to join other parties even in difficult positions. But it lost its primary significance.
