As it is said by Sergei Rachmaninov Music is enough for lifetime but lifetime is not enough for music.
There was a time where there was a much encouragement from Persia and history says most of the musicians and instruments were from Persia only. Later Muslim countries much addicted to their religious belief and followers, has led to such ghostly hadith saying its against AL!@ and mentioned in Qur*n
Great musicians and musical instruments were believed to be from Persia, but later it rest with very few families and adoption and cultivation was retained with them only.
When it comes to WHY - those who adored music were believed to be non-muslim but are referred to Sufis (who were believed to be religious neutral but loved music) and later it has become a lineage, either particular type of music has to be learn with them only, and has become a family tradition (I could nt find specific term for this) or culture or adoption / gurukul.

The problem is not coming from the religion, it;s coming from the leaders, If in any religion, u follow leaders, then U would end up, not knowing what to believe and what not to believe,as I know Mohamed, the islam profit, never said such a thing, it;s just those clergys, are the one who make things up, well that;s what i believe
