Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is the examination of nature, its models, systems, processes, and elements to emulate or take inspiration from in order to solve human problems sustainably. The term biomimicry was popularized by Janine Benyus, a scientist and author, in her book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature However, the concept of biomimicry as an approach to innovation has been around for a while. Benyus cites an Alaskan hunter stalking seals like a polar bear or the invention of the airplane and telephone as past examples of biomimicry. A closely related term to biomimicry is biomimetics. Biomimetics is the study of how to apply the methods and principles found in nature to modern science and engineering.
