Many attempts by USSR and NASA failed earlier. However in 1962 USSRA Mars-1 mission was partially successful.
In 1964, NASA'S Mariner-4 was the first successful mission.
Then in 1971, USSR's Mars-2 crashed on the surface of Mars.

Mars-1 was Launched by USSR in 1962. It was a Fly By. Mission terminated 21 March 1963. Some data collected, but lost contact before reaching Mars.
Flyby at approx. 193,000 km
Mariner 4 Launched by NASA on 28 November 1964, arrived 14 July 1965 Terminated 21 December 1967.
Flyby Success (21 images returned).
Mars-2 Launched by USSR on 19 May 1971 arrived Mars in November 1971, crashed on surface of Mars.
