Tsunamis are produced due to the sudden jerks that are caused by earthquakes under the sea and also due to volcanic eruption under the sea..these waves once produced can travel long distances and still they loose very less kinetic energy...u must be remembering the tsunami that was caused in indonesia and it travelled up to east coast of africa
