There are many turning points. One of them is Maratha King Chatrapati Shivaji. Guess what whould have Inda had been without him or the subseuqent rise of Maratha Empire. We would have almost become an Islamic state.

Warm regards

July 1, 1991 was a fateful day for India after independence. It was on this day that India reached zero foreign exchange reserves, with mounting debt. All economic policies of the preceding governments had failed; the country was technically bankrupt.
Foreign debt at that time stood at US$69 billion and it could not be serviced. Hence foreign banks could seize Indian assets abroad. There was an urgent need to do something before the nation collapsed.

That is when the current Prime Minister, Dr. Man Mohan Singh, arrived on the scene. He had to be persuaded to relinquish his comfortable job at the United Nations in favor of a cruddy job as India's finance minister. He took the challenge and almost immediately sold off US$200 million worth of confiscated gold (from smugglers) and then air lifted several tons of Indian gold stored at the Reserve Bank of India to the Bank of England to act as collateral. A $400 million line of credit allowed India to ride out its greatest credit crisi ...more

P. V. Narasimha Rao, served as the 12th Prime Minister of the Republic of India. He led one of the most important administrations in India's modern history, overseeing a major economic transformation and several incidents affecting national security. Rao accelerated the dismantling of the license raj. Rao, also called the "Father of Indian Economic Reforms," is best remembered for launching India's free market reforms that rescued the almost bankrupt nation from economic collapse. He was also commonly referred to as the Chanakya of modern India for his ability to steer tough economic and political legislation through the parliament at a time when he headed a minority government. Rao's term as Prime Minister was an eventful one in India's history. Besides marking a paradigm shift from the socialist economy propagated by Nehru to a market driven one.

The Year is May 1991. Congress won the polls and decided to choose P V Narasimha Rao. The real turning point is the fast decision he took about Finance Minister. You know how - much time he used to take a decision. Manmohan Singh is the turning point of India. Imagine - India had few cars Ambasodar, Maruti 800 and Premier Padmini. There was not indicator lights in all two wheelers. Maruti 800 you have to wait to buy. Telephones and times have changed. You now say credited crisis. Then Made in India means inferior quality. Before Manmohan Singh came as FM, India got freedom in 1947. 44 years of freedom and India did not develop. To put it in one sentence death of Rajiv Gandhi changed India.
