Shatabti expresses are day time expresses having chair cars and Rajadhani expresses are night trains having sleeper berths. Along with Duronto expresses ( all of them have only a/c coaches) the three are the fastest trains of Indian Railway.

The Shatabdis are among the fastest trains in India and the Indian Railways considers them as prestigious. The Shatabdi Express trains run over short to medium distances while the Rajdhani Expresses are long-distance trains connecting the nation's capital New Delhi to capitals of states. Both series of trains have a regular speed of about 130 km/h (81 mph). The 12001 Bhopal Shatabdi express, however, runs at a peak speed of 150 km/h (93 mph), which makes it the fastest train in India.

Technically Shatabdi and Rajdani are same. They use the same type of locomotive. Speed of a train depends on Three factors. a) whether the locomotive and the rake used are capable of being operated at high speed.b) the track condition c) density of Traffic in the route. .Satabdhi or Rajdhani are same when it comes to factor (a) Their achieving their optimum speed with depend on the section in which they are passing through. All factors being same, both Rajadhani and Satabdi can attain the same optimum speed. The basic difference between the two trains are Rajdhani are long distance train and Sathabdi are short distance. Secondly all Rajdhani train ply between Delhi and other state capital Whereas Sathabdi need not connect Delhi. It can connect any two major stations.
