Puri ko Buri & Patmini ko Badmini karke Tamils used to pronounce (including me when in schools). As they pronounce so do they write. Unlike in other Indian languages, Tamil does not have a letter for soft sounds like : B, J, S, G, D etc.

In Tamizh there is no classifications for consonents. In other modern languages, for example the sound "ka" has classifications into four pronounciations. You write "Ganga" in Tamizh and show that four tamizh persons they will pronounce four "Ganga"s. Since it is old there was no classifications such as "P" & "B" so it is Buri-Masala only and no Puri- Masala.
