Gandhi was awarded the British Empire War Medal for raising Indian Ambulance Corps for British in Boer War. Gndhi returned the ward in 1920 as a gesture of non cooperation towards the British Government.

At the time of the Zulu revolt, he raised a stretcher-bearer party and served till the end of the rebellion. On both these occasions he received medals and was even mentioned in despatches. For his work in South Africa he was given by Lord Hardinge a Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal.
