This needs a lot of explanation LH and if you have the patience please go thru the following interesting information which I collected from the Net.
Thank you for this opportunity as I myself got to know something new:
Twin cities are a special case of two cities or urban centres which are founded in close geographic proximity and then grow into each other over time. The term Twin Cities in the United States refers specifically to the cities Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Cities twinned geographically do not necessarily match demographically, economically, or politically.

In the normal course of things, cities which grow into each other\'s space in this way lose their individual identity and whatever border or barrier still separates them becomes irrelevant as they fuse into one new city. One famous example of this is Budapest in Hungary, which began as two settlements (Buda and Pest) facing each other across the Danube at a strategic fording place along a trade route. ...more

So is Ahmedabad a very old city founded in the early years of the 15th Century. By the time we got independence, both the cities had outgrown itself so much that, it was impossible to find adequate space for any further modern development. The roads were narrow, there were congested lanes based on the old style of development and it was far too over crowded.

To ease these problems, both the cities were developed in a planned out manner straddling their age old par ...more

Those cities are very near to eachother & now the distance between both are filled up with human habitation & concrete jungle so though they are known by different names but have no boundries between them, they are called twin cities.
