Q.

Have you noticed??? That the statue of Mother Mary at the Basilica (at Mount mary church, Mumbai) which is now going on is holding Lord Jesus in her right hand. In most statues of Mother Mary, Lord Jesus sits comfortably in the left hand of his mother. Why is it so, can anybody tell us??

Although the current church edifice is just 100 years old, the history behind the current statue of Our Lady goes back to the 16th century when Jesuit priests from Portugal brought the statue to the current location and constructed a chapel. In 1700 Arab pirates interested in the gilt-lined object held in the hand disfigured the statue by cutting off the right hand.

In 1760, the church was rebuilt and the statue was substituted with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators in St. Andrew's church nearby. This statue has an interesting legend. It goes that a Koli fisherman dreamt that he would find a statue in the sea. The statue was found floating in the sea between 1700 and 1760. A Jesuit Annual Letter dated to 1669 and published in the book St. Andrew's Church, Bandra (16161966) supports this claim.

However, I think the story of the statue found floating in the sea is a made up story. The original statue was rebuilt and baby Jesus was placed on the right hand to conceal her disfigur ...more

Normally a person who is a right hander will always hold an infant on the right side and a left hander will always hold on the left side. It is not known whether mother Mary was a right hander or a left hander to say which version of the image is correct. Possibly the sculptor who made this status was himself a left hander and found it fit to position the infant Jesus on the left hand of His Mother. There is another possibility. Depending of the place where the status is placed from the lighting point of view by placing the child on the left hand would possibly be giving a better visibility.

Does it make any difference ? I have seen many pictures of Lord Jesus Christ in full English suit, and another fully shaven, and another with crew cut hair. All these are products of imagination of the artists. Mother's Mary's holding Infant Jesus might be either a different imagination of the artist or he has made a mistake. In both the cases it does not make any difference. After all why these people are making these and why these church people are installing these idols in the churches is absurd. Cross is the only symbol of christian belief and that too shows love of God for man, and not for worshipping. It becoms a tendancy to people to worship these super idols which is strictly prohibitted. Roman Catholic and Orthdox churches have become museums of saints. Nonsense.

I never noticed till you told me. I am missing her so much, coz I am in Bangalore now.I guess she was found by the kolis in the sea and the person who carved her must be from a different caste with less knowledge about the Mother's other statues worldwide.
