It is the Latin form of the traditional greeting to Mother Mary. Catholics say a Prayer called " Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with Thee....." The original Latin prayer began with " Ave Maria..".. so Ave Maria means Hail Mary.
There is a song now called Ave Maria sung in operatic style by Pavarotti.

Celine Dion explained
Ave Maria, Maiden mild
Oh, listen to a maiden's prayer
For thou canst hear amid the wild
'Tis thou, 'tis thou canst save amid, despair
We slumber safely till the morrow
Though we've by man outcast reviled
Oh Maiden, see a maiden's sorrow ...more
