One author I admire for his imagination is Roald Dhal, he writes fiction for adults as well as children. Some of his stories for children have been adapted for the screen, 'Witches' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' are the ones I have seen on TV. Yan Martel, the author of 'Life of Pi' and Ruth Rendell, who writes murder mysteries are also very good. Keep in mind, taste is a personal and yours might differ from mine.
