Well in the upper crust of society many women do smoke and drink quite regularly especially in their kitty parties. So it is not something unusual for them. Amongst the poor , i've seen women labourers smoking bidi and they drink toddy too. It is only in the middle class that these things are considered vices. But here i feel the middle class have got their act right. Smoking is bad and excessive drinking is also bad.

Drinking and smoking has been traditionally a male domain. Old women, women of easy virtue, and loose moral character, were also associated with smoking and drinking. So this traditional outlook has comedown today and only 'high' society women can get away with these habits. In any other class of society it is still held as some thing taboo for women of 'good' families. Since all want to assert that their family is a 'good' family, women are forbidden from these things. It is very good in a way, that women keep themselves away from these habits! Just imagine what wopuld have been the scenario if women were also.....!!!

In my opinion only women are protecting our culture. They accept husbands' whims as their fate, habits as they are natural, torture as destiny and second grade citizenship as providence.. If they start smoking taking alcohol, the whole set up of the Indian family will be changed.. See the family fabric of the very rich, and you will understand. At least I give credit to Indian women. The reason is our culture, society rules, customs, which move around the religion.

I beg to differ from your observation. I have travelled all over India and have noticed in many cities ladies do drink and smoke. The percentage may be less. But I fear that it is increasing.. While I was in Shillong, I could notice many ladies drinking and smoking matching their counterparts.

It is because of social taboo. Our society in general is less tolerant to a women drinking or smoking. That is why it is difficult for a women to take to smoking and drinking (at least in public) hence they do not get habituated to it as easily as men do. Most of the people pick up these habits in their adolescent years. If one does not take to any of these addiction by mid twenties they seldom get hooked on to it. In case of women most of them lead a protected life and do not enjoy as much freedom as men do. Hence men are more prone to get addicted to these habits than women. At the same time in societies where it is not a taboo for women to drink or smoke, women get addicted to these habit as much as men. For instance among tribal women they keep constantly chewing tobacco or opium and even drink as much as men. In Andhra Pradesh there are some tribes where women keep smoking crude cigars with the lighted end inside the mouth. In modern day society, in families, where girls have the ...more

This is only in middle class moralistic strata of our society. In Lower classes both males and female drink and smoke and so is the case of rich elite.

In the Hindu middle class the moralities of Vaishnavite-Hinduism and cultural code is followed by ladies be it dressing ( Sari) or following other aspects of culture. Though one may say that it is not just among Vasishnav Hindus but that was dominant culture which could suppress practices of others which permitted consumption of alcohol and smoking.

It is said that dress , food and language reflect the culture and if you give up one of them you tend to loose the culture this is very much true in our case. Males had to give up the traditional dress and mother tongue and thus they started accepting other aspects of alien culture but women who were more home bound could stick to the culture more closely.
